The Bukobero Community Health Centre III
We are getting very close to the completion of the Bukobero Community Health Centre III in the Bududa District of eastern Uganda! The exterior of the building is now complete and the finishing work on the inside has begun. This year we have also seen the delivery of the facilities backup generator and fuel tank.
Frequent outages of the national grid and a particularly heavy rainy season this spring have slowed the work, though. The electrical outages impact the construction of the metal windows and doors and the rainy season slows deliveries down and increases transport costs. The metal frames and doors are made by hand and the equipment to make them can’t operate without electricity. Progress is being made, though, and we expect the installation of the windows and doors in the next month.
The building is three stories – the first will be for clinic operations, the second for future clinic expansion, and the third will be a multi-purpose space to be used for health education, vaccination clinics, community meetings, and a homework center. Research has shown that a lighted, secure space can have wide ranging impacts on rural African communities including, improved academic performance due to extended study hours, increased gender equity in education, enhanced social cohesion through evening gatherings and expanded economic opportunities, such as evening meetings or processing activities for cooperatives. The community is very excited for the opening of this space.
We are also very excited about the addition of portable obstetric ultrasound to the services offered by the clinic. Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) can be done at the bedside or in someone’s home, if needed. We will be the only facility in a catchment area of over 100,000 people to offer ultrasound.
Finally, I would like to thank all the donors to the Bukobero Community Health Centre III. We have had very generous private donors and tremendous support from over 55 Rotary Clubs in the Pacific Northwest. If you are a member of a Rotary Club or a community organization and would like to have a presentation about the Bukobero Community Health Centre III, please drop us a line. We would be delighted to come!
